Powered paragliding is often viewed as a higher risk sport than it actually is. There is a potential for injury for the reckless or ill prepared. The safety of our wonderful sport is directly influenced by the quality of equipment and training, along with the skill and common sense of the pilot. Almost all paragliding accidents are the result of pilot error. The new paragliding equipment today is very well built and, if properly cared for, very safe.   The cost of instruction should never be a deterrent to getting quality training.  That is why Ohio Powered Paragliding LLC provides free training with the purchase of a paramotor and paraglider.

Training
Options

Introductory Tandem Flight - $100
The tandem flight with instructor, Bruce Brown, is an excellent way to get a good understanding of what it is like to fly a powered paraglider.  You are introduced to the parts of the motor unit and paraglider and the student passenger can even take control of the paraglider in flight if desired.   The maximum passenger weight  is about 200 pounds. Allow about 1 hour to complete.

Introductory Hands-On Lesson - $100
This lesson is an introduction to all things - powered paragliding.  We will meet at the training field and you will get a chance to see, touch and try on all the equipment.  You will learn some basics of ground handling a paraglider with a harness, feel the weight of a paramotor on your back, and even start the engine on your back and feel the thrust.  If conditions permit, instructor, Bruce Brown, will do a demo flight answering any and all of your questions before, during and after the flight.  A great all-round way to find out about powered paragliding - especially if you are overthe  200 pound tandem limit  Allow about 2 hours.

Complete Motorized Trike Course  - $1000
To take this course you will need to own a paramotor, a trike, and a paraglider. This course is the complete motorized training course.  Everyone progresses at a different rate, so the necessary time will be taken to insure you are trained properly, know all the rules of flying in any location, and flying safely before you are encouraged to fly on your own at home. Allow 4-5 days for this complete course.

Complete Motorized Foot Launch Course - $1000

So What is Training Like:
The five day training course is offered several times a month by appointment only.  It can be a one-on-one experience or up to three students during the week.  We don't train more that three people at any one time.  With more than three students at a time, the students will not get the attention they need, and the instructor will be spread too thin.   We start on Monday mornings at 8:30.   We will have two sessions a day - approximately 8:30AM to 12:00 noon and 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM.  You will get a break during the middle of the day (when the winds usually pick up) to rest, and absorb what you have accomplished in the morning session or do business.  If we get a day or so of rain, we will work inside the shop on classroom ground school instruction.   This will include the study of weather, reading aviation sectional charts (so you know where you can and can not fly), FAR 103 ( the rules we fly under), and a viewing and discussion of the Risk and Reward Video.
We have high wind practice gliders for ground handling if the winds kick up. Practice harnesses are provided during training but purchase is recommended for continuing improvement at home of ground handling skills without the motor.  This light free-flight harness in one of the best investments you can make to ensure skill improvement that will help minimize equipment damage in the long run.  It can also be used for free flight paragliding from hills, bluffs and mountains.  We provide communication helmets and radios during your solo flights here during training and offer these helmets for sale as well.

A typical training week would look like this:
Monday - Introduction to the paraglider and ground handling practice without the motor
Tuesday - Continued ground handling practice without the motor and introduction to the motor
Wednesday - More ground handling without and with the motor (not running) on your back
Thursday- More ground handling, hang check, fine adjustment of the motor balance, simulated flights in the flight simulator and first solo
Friday - More solo flights
This is a guideline only and each student progresses at a different rate.  We work with the strengths and weaknesses of each student to take you from knowing very little to being able to fly at home - comfortable and confident that you will be successful.

The Ohio PPG training fields are dedicated smooth grass surfaces with plenty of open space.

United States Powered Paragliding Association Ratings

As a United States Powered Paragliding Association (USPPA) School, Ohio Powered Paragliding offers The USPPA sanctioned ratings for those pilots wanting to participate in the rating process.  When taking the Ohio PPG Complete Motorized Training Course, the student will receive a USPPA PPG 1 rating at the completion of their training at no additional charge.  This will require joining the USPPA ($34 fee).  You will receive a $100 incentive reimbursement from the USPPA paid to you for achieving the PPG 2 rating (See below).  Ratings are offered to pilots who have received formal training and come to the rating process with a base of knowledge from their formal training and their flying experience.  This rating program with the fees shown below is not intended to replace a complete formal motorized training program.

USPPA Ratings:

Ohio PPG Fees:

PPG 1 Rating
Ohio PPG Students - included with the Complete Motorized Training Course - No Charge

PPG 2 Rating
Ohio PPG trained pilots - $150 ($100 USPPA reimbursement upon completion)
Experienced  pilots - $200  ($100 USPPA reimbursement upon completion)

PPG 3 Rating
    Experienced pilots with a PPG 1 and 2 rating  - $100
Experienced Pilots without a PPG 1 and 2 rating - $225 ($100 USPPA reimbursement upon completion)

From the USPPA Website:

USPPA will reimburse part of a pilot's training cost when they achieve their PPG2 rating within limits listed below. The goal is to encourage thorough training through complete use of the syllabus, simulators, ground work and skill building.  Amounts reimbursed are: From no rating to PPG2 is $100.

How it Works & Requirements

1. Use a current and qualified USPPA PPG Instructor to get training for the rating you desire and qualify for. The USPPA syllabus must be used and filled out for each rating obtained. Pass the tests, accumulate the requisite experience and demonstrate the specified skills. For the PPG2, our basic pilot rating, those are pretty straight forward. The most difficult is that you must consistently be able to land, after a power-off glide from 300 feet high, within 40 foot of a target.

Instructor payment is up to you and it doesn't have to be the same instructor as who gave you all your training, but the one that gave you the rating must fill out the reimbursement form.

2. Pilot submits the following:

A. Rating application.

B. Signed reimbursement request form. This must be signed by you and the instructor testifying that training was given, the syllabus was used and that payment was made to the instructor.

C. Copy of the first syllabus page for each rating obtained showing that it was properly filled out.

3. A check will be sent within approximately 30 days to your address as listed in our membership file.

4. The pilot seeking reimbursement must actually pay for training that is equal to or greater than what is claimed on the rebate. It is reimbursement for training actually paid.

Who is Eligible?

Any powered paraglider pilot is eligible. Non-USPPA members must join concurrently with the application. You can submit your membership application payment simultaneously with the reimbursement application, including membership payment.

Funding & Duration

We are using a combination of general funds and charitable donations, the largest of which came from the Parastars club in 2006. The program will continue until funds devoted to it ($20,000) are used up which means it will likely go through 2010.

If you are interested in promoting training by contributing to this program, USPPA can accept tax-deductible donations for this purpose.
